This International Students’ Summer School would not have been possible without the financial support of Erasmus Life Long Learning Intensive Programme Era/IP/0907. We thank the European Union for the opportunity to learn about E-publishing across borders and to meet people from different countries and exchange ideas. We would also like to thank our Gold sponsor Kluwer and many other companies and volunteers who have made this ISSS so successful. Click on    Read more   to know their names!

MANY THANKS  for all your warm words at the closure session!  You were great!

It was a real pleasure to organize the International Students’ Summer School 2010 (ISSS) on E-publishing in Heemskerk for you. We hope to keep in touch and meet you again on Facebook, but hopefully in real life as well!

The Dutch Team

Beach Party

Everything good has to end :( Tomorrow all participants will depart to their homes, but today we had the last chance to walk on sand and feel the fresh breeze from the North Sea!

Final presentations

Time for the final presentations of our work within students to students workshops and project groups!

Talents Night

What a night! Nobody expected so many talents gathering at the same time in one place :) Three teams decided to refer to their introduction films, which buckled nicely those two weeks.

Firstly, Dutch Secret Agents made their appearance: there was a mystery, some delicious prize, singing and even sort of dancing ;)

Then, Olivia&John popped out of the blue looking disturbingly similar to our Polish friends.

Bulgarian girls changed the mood to more lyrical with their national poetry, as well as songs performed with a lovely voice of Veneta.

After that the most “danceful” team showed us how to move – Lithuanian ladies conquered the dance floor.

And finally, the Germans taught us the real meaning of international relations by inviting each other to a party in 10 different languages and communication styles :)

Workshops and projects

During the whole stay in Heemskerk we were working within project and workshops groups. Today came time for the finishing touch – we will present the results tomorrow.

Day in the Hague

Today we visited the National Library of the NetheralndsKoninklijke Bibliotheek. Firstly, we had a chance to listen to Marijke Waarheid who described the E-depot developed to preserve digital objects. After that we went for a guided tour through hallways of KB – we even saw the underground storage ;) Later Hildelies Balk, the head of European projects, talked about co-operation within different European initiatives and Annette Friberg made us more familiar with the Europeana Foundation.

After lectures came time for little fun – Madurodam!

Dutch night

Last national evening is just over :( The hosts decided it is too hot, so we need some skate racing :D That is why the Dutch organize for ISSSers a special version of their famous Elfstedentocht!

German lecture

In a duo-presentation Ulrike Schoemer and Monika Massmeyer teached us about choices we could make when would like to publish in traditional journals or Open Access. They also spoke about strategies and business models behind Open Access in Germany.

Lithuanian night

Yesterday Lithuanians took us back to school :) The fourth national evening was an interesting combination of sharing knowledge and enjoying cultural differences.

Polish lecture

In the afternoon came time for e-culture and e-publishing in Poland. Michał Zając explained and illustrated  history, present situation and potential future development in that field.

Bulgarian lecture

This Sunday was full of lectures, starting with Bulgarian ones. Firstly, Milena Milanova talked about e-publishing from librarian point of view. The second part of morning session concerned e-publication of Bulgarian heritage.

Match

Even after all day of biking we wanted to play a football match! One team won, but we all had fun^^

Biking experience

What a day! We went to the sand dunes in the morning and to the Zaanse Schans in the afternoon. Unstable weather, lots of bikes and, afterwards, aching legs – real Dutch experience :)

A canal boat tour through the old city and the harbour, picnic in the famous Vondelpark and walking along many highlights of the city enjoying the atmosphere of Amsterdam. One day was definitely too short!

German night

The third national evening is already behind us! Germans prepared very exciting activities and successfully encouraged others to participate :)

Inspiring visit at Kluwer!

Yesterday for two hours we shared opinions with Taco Morelisse the CEO of Kluwer (the boss :-) ) and John Nouwens (manager innovation team). It was very exciting to talk about hypes and challenges and to hear about the innovations implemented by one of the leaders in the world of publishing!

Lithuanian lecture

Today came time for e-publishing from Lithuanian point of view – Jurgita Kunigiškytė talked about current situation in the country. There was also time for a small assignment :)

Picnic at Braassemer plassen

We started our fifth day at ISSS with a picnic near lakes! Sun, water and happy participants – you cannot expect more ^^

Polish night

Yesterday we enjoyed second national evening which was full of surprises! Getting to know a little bit more about the history of Poland became just an amazing experience :)

Dutch lecture

Today in the morning we had a wonderful lecture about e-books and business model in the Netherlands. It was difficult to stop students from sharing their views on that topic ;)

Bulgarian night

Bulgarian started our series of national evenings! There were a lot of delicious food yesterday and we learned few facts about the motherland of our friends^^

Plane crash

This morning we heard the tragic news about the plane crash in Russia. Today is a very sad day for Poland. The impact on the society goes beyond all imagination…

Our hearts and thoughts are with the families of the victims and our dear Polish colleagues and students of our consortium partner the University of Warsaw. We wish them strength in these  difficult and confusing days…

To the coast!

Early Saturday morning. To the coast for inspiration for the leisure programme of ISSS.

Kluwer

Today Peter and I had a very inspiring meeting with Kluwer, one of our sponsors. They have a lot of  international experience with E-publishing and would like to contribute to our summer school. How? Excursion? E-books? Lecture? Can’t wait to tell you more about it…

Hi,

We have just added a movie about the Future of Publishing on the Programme Page / E-publishing. Watch it till the end! It’s fun!

Warm and sunny greetings

Warm and sunny Easter/spring greetings for all ISSSers!

The beginning

Lectures, workshops, culture, trips, English, different countries, students, teachers, fun. When you say this words you can only talk about ISSS. This year the event will be in Heemskerk, in the Netherlands.
With this blog the Dutch team will abreast you about the preparations of ISSS, that will take place in July 2010.

Like I said, ISSS stands for a lot of things: lectures, getting to know each other, discovering new cultures, short:
AN EXPERIENCE OF A LIFETIME!
Students keep in touch by facebook, to talk before or after this event about this great experience.

On this blog you can find pictures of the Stay Okay hotel where we will be staying this summer and posts of the Dutch team about the preparations.
Don’t be shy to leave a comment or give us some new ideas.
For now there’s only one thing for us left to say: SEE YOU IN JULY IN THE NETHERLANDS!

Website is here!

18th ISSS’s website is launched!!! But don’t think that’s its final look -> We’ll try to add new things every week, so stay update :)
